Norwegian photographer Helge Skodvin, one of the most distinctive voices on the Scandinavian documentary scene, is coming to the 13th edition of VIZUALIZATOR. A conversation with the author will take place on Thursday, 27 November, at 6 PM at Nikola Radošević Gallery (Delijska 3, Uskočka 5), followed by the opening of his exhibition We Can’t Complain – Bergen in May at 7 PM.
Drawing from his long-term project on Bergen—one of Europe’s rainiest cities, with more than 200 rainy days a year and only a single month of sunlight—Skodvin will share what it means to work on a series that brings together documentary precision, sharp humor, and the ability to notice what most people overlook. Since 2018, Skodvin has photographed the month of May in his hometown of Bergen, the brief period when the city temporarily transforms into a space of collective optimism. Through bizarre details from public space, spontaneous parades, blooming streets, and fleeting celebrations, he documents an atmosphere that lasts only a few days but leaves a powerful imprint on the city’s identity.
During the talk, the author will guide the audience through several key themes:
-
how a long-term documentary project rooted in everyday life is developed
-
how to “read” a city and find motifs that everyone sees but no one notices
-
how to create visual humor without caricature or stereotype
-
how photography can function simultaneously as document and commentary
The conversation is intended for photographers, students, journalists, visual artists, and anyone interested in deepening their understanding of how atmosphere, humor, rhythm, and narrative are constructed in photography.
Capacity is limited.
