Artist Talk: Pauliana Valente Pimentel

What does youth look like on the edge of tradition, the internet, and identity? Ahead of the opening of the exhibition Narcissism of Small Differences, one of Portugal’s most significant contemporary photographers, Pauliana Valente Pimentel, will speak with the audience about her work, the generations she photographs, and the ways she constructs her visual narratives.

The talk will take place on Sunday, December 7, starting at 6 PM, at Galerija Novembar (Kursulina 22).

Pauliana’s series, created on São Miguel Island in the Azores, documents young people growing up in a space where tradition, the closed nature of the community, and global digital culture are in constant collision. Through portraits and landscapes, the artist examines what it means to belong to a place that is both remote and hyper-connected, and what happens when the desire for freedom meets family expectations.

At the artist talk, Pauliana will speak about:

  • her approach to photographing young people in small, isolated communities
  • a working process that combines documentary photography, psychology, and visual poetry
  • the relationship between tradition and modernity in the Azores
  • Freud’s concept of the “narcissism of small differences” and why she reinterprets it through empathy
  • how identities are formed by a generation raised online—and how photography can seek to understand them

This is a rare opportunity for the Belgrade audience to engage closely with her work, learn about the research behind the series, and ask questions about methodology, aesthetics, and themes that concern a global young generation.

Registration is available via the link. The number of places is limited.
