All or Nothing, Angelo Leonardo

Le Monde ou Rien (All or Nothing) by Italian photographer Angelo Leonardo is a photographic study of a Milan that is rarely seen, and even more rarely understood. Leonardo travels along the city’s outer ring, a boundary that encloses the Milanese center and separates it from the city’s real, everyday pulse. These are places that do not exist in the tourist imagination: neighborhoods such as Cinisello Balsamo, San Siro, Barona, Corvetto, La Trecca, or Bovisasca—today home to generations of young people, children of different languages, origins, and destinies.

His photographs follow the lives of people whose voices rarely reach the wider public, except in moments of crisis or sensationalism. Leonardo, however, offers a view from within: both documentary and empathetic. At the heart of the project is the story of eleven-year-old Diego, a boy from public housing who, with no formal artistic education, created powerful, abstract, emotionally charged works. His raw and honest paintings become a counterpoint to Leonardo’s black-and-white photographs.

All or Nothing is a meeting of two perspectives; together, they build a multilayered narrative about growing up, suppressed hopes, and the constant movement between visibility and invisibility. The photography and art that emerge from the cracks between “the world” and “nothing” speak to the destinies that shape the future inhabitants of Milan—and reflect a universal experience of life on the margins of major European cities.
