Artist Talk: Angelo Leonardo

As part of the exhibition The World or Nothing, young Italian photographer Angelo Leonardo will speak about one of the most notable contemporary documentary projects focusing on the lives of young people on the outskirts of Milan.

The talk will take place on Friday, December 12, starting at 6 PM, at the Gallery of the National Bank of Serbia(Nemanjina 17).

Angelo Leonardo will discuss the development of his long-term project Le Monde ou Rien, how he builds trust with the communities he photographs, what long-term documentary research entails, and where empathy, aesthetics, and the author’s social responsibility intersect.

The conversation will cover the following topics:

  • representation of marginalized communities and how to avoid stereotypes
  • the role of young people in redefining contemporary European identity
  • the boundary between documentary and artistic language
  • ethics and responsibility of photographers working with vulnerable groups
  • the contemporary Italian documentary scene and the positioning of this project within it

The audience will also have the opportunity to hear how the relationship between the author and Diego developed—whose emotional drawings accompany the exhibition—and what it means to “bear witness from within” to a world that is often misrepresented or rendered invisible.
